If people talk to us, will we listen?

I love talking to people. Understanding their unique values, ideas, passions and hopes for the future is why I became ‘hooked’ on qualitative research. The first time I sat in front of a conservationist, interviewing him for a resarch project about hunting in NSW National Parks, I had an epiphany that social research was my passion.

I am a community organiser and activist

My background in anti-nuclear protests, cooperative housing, and the climate movement has given me unique insights into how and why people organise over contentions issues. I have experience in government and can provide advice tailored to current adaptation and coastal management practices.

My PhD into sea-level rise adaptation called ‘The micropolitics of transformative sea-level rise adaptation in Brisbane Water and Wamberal Beach, Central Coast, Australia’ allowed me to understand the history of coastal management in Australia.

My recent publication for the peer reviewed journal, Regional Environmental Change, called ‘Towards an agonistic approach to planned retreat: fear, anger, and hope in the Central Coast, Australia‘ describes community mobilisation for and against a proposed planned retreat policy in this location.
